Sledmere Village

Sledmere is situated about six miles (10 ha) from the northern boundary of the Yorkshire Wolds, a range of undulating hills covering around 200,000 acres (81,000 ha) that stretch in an arc from the Humber to Flamborough Head. Surrounded by parkland and extensive plantations, the village appears like an oasis in the generally more open landscape of the area. First recorded in the Domesday Book in 1096, the settlement was one of the most populous in the Wolds throughout the Middle Ages and, in 1303, a charter was granted for a weekly market and annual fair to be held there.
