Dr David Neave - A lecture on the East Riding Landed Families
Wed 29th March to Wed 29th March  (11.00 am - 1.00pm)

The landed families of the Georgian and Victorian East Riding were a mixed bunch. Some such as the Hothams of South Dalton and the St Quintins of Scampston had been great landowners from the Middle Ages, whilst there were those who arrived in the 17th century as did the Bethells at Rise and the Boyles (Lords Burlington) at Londesborough. Others built up estates in the 18th and 19th centuries based on merchant or trading fortunes like the Sykes of Sledmere and the Wilsons (Lords Nunburnholme) of Warter

The origins and often chequered history of some of these families will be traced and their homes illustrated.

Price £30pp (includes two course lunch and glass of wine and coffee)
